What does adult psychiatry include?

The two main facets of adult psychiatry are:

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy, also called talk therapy and counseling, involves talking through your thoughts and feelings with highly trained mental health specialists. The team provides a nonjudgmental space to get support, and they provide tools to improve your daily life.

The Adelpha Psychiatric Group psychiatrists are experts in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and many other psychotherapeutic approaches.

Medication management

Medication management is the prescription and monitoring of mental health medications. The experienced psychiatrists at Adelpha Psychiatric Group are medical doctors with unique clinical skills rarely seen in the psychiatric community. They can expertly diagnose your condition and determine which medication works best for it.

Some of the medications included in medication management are antidepressants (including MAOIs, TCAs), antipsychotics (including clozapine), mood stabilizers, and Suboxone® for opiate dependency. The team can manage medication use during pregnancy, while breastfeeding, and in other unique circumstances.

Many Adelpha Psychiatric Group patients prefer to consolidate their adult psychiatry care, seeing the same provider for medication management and psychotherapy. However, the Adelpha Psychiatric Group psychiatrists are also more than happy to coordinate with existing therapists or work with their in-house Associate Marriage Family Therapist to foster a collaborative mental health team for patients.

What happens during adult psychiatry consultations?

Adelpha Psychiatric Group considers your first three visits consultations. These visits are an opportunity for your mental health specialist to get to know your needs, gather important information about your mental health, and work with you to develop an integrative treatment plan. It is recommended to complete the three visit initial consultation within 2-3 weeks of the first visit.

In addition to in-depth talks with you, the team will ask your permission to contact your primary care doctor or other mental health providers. This helps them understand your needs and better plan your treatment. They might also ask to speak to your partner or other family members.
